Bitsy came to the Rescue through a local veterinarian in November, 1998. She was suffering from severe founder and needed extensive medical treatment. She had some tremendous improvements and horrific spirals until the decision was made in August, 1999 to humanely euthanize her. Bitsy is missed by everyone that knew her. Her heart was so strong, her kindness and love so unlimited, but her body was too weak to overcome the odds.
Dun (on left) with Lefty share some gossip over the water cooler. Dun was surrendered by his owner in April 1997 due to extreme heaves. Just breathing was a huge effort for him. He was turned out in the field with the herd and his breathing improved slightly. That summer was a hot and humid one. Dun's lungs were so damaged that he could not get enough air. The vet was called, he was treated but, it was not meant to be. Dun died in August 1997.
Monkey (in the back) and Moose came to the Rescue in May 1998. They were found running loose and were emaciated with horribly over grown hooves. Monkey recovered well and became a member of the 'herd'. In July 1998, Monkey experienced a displaced large intestine. Due to her advanced age, 30+, surgery was not an option. Monkey was humanely euthanized when it became apparent that she was in distress.
TWISTER was surrendered from Staten Island. She was living in a backyard with no grass to eat. She developed a Vitamin E and muscle deficency. When she first arrived her Vitamin E would not even register. It took a nice spring on grass to make it show up slightly. We finally found the right mix and she began to read in a normal range. She adored the kids and would stand to be groomed for hours. Twisty found a family to share the rest of her life with and is now at peace.
ALGEBRA was dubbed the "Death Row Pony" by the local newspaper. Having lived for 2 1/2 years at a local SPCA with no training, their board voted to euthanize him. His history is long and sad. He trusted NO ONE. Al spent his days with Barney and some others just 'living' life. Slowly, he seemed to be trying to trust again. When he finally knew that he needed help, he asked. During his final hours he allowed a human to be near him. Algebra is seen in this picture with Vince Felty, a local trainer, and the person who helped us get Al moved from the SPCA.
MOUSE was removed from a local farm by law enforcement for neglect. Mouse's hooves were curled from not being trimmed and she was extremely thin. Upon close examination of her mouth by our veterinarian. it was learned that at some point her tongue had been mutilated. How? We will never know. We do know that she is terrified of people. We separate her at feeding time to insure that she gets her full ration. Mouse has begun to trust again. Mouse's feet upon arrival on left. Nine months later on the right. Mouse was finally allowed to rest in peace.
